The term "biotech," short for "biotechnology," refers to the application and manipulation of biological resources to develop products and processes that fulfill industrial and other human objectives. While popular imagination tends to latch onto controversial fields of biotechnological research like DNA typing, cloning, and stem cell research, the fact is that biotechnology has commonplace applications ranging from bread production to wastewater recycling that influence our daily lives. The consequence of this wide reach of biotechnology is that the number biotech jobs continues to grow faster than the numbers of jobs in other sectors
The Divisions of Biotech
A great number of industries are directly influenced by biotechnology, and it would be difficult to mention all of them in a short article. However, to provide a

broader perspective, jobs in biotechnology can be grouped into three functional categories:

Research and development: Considered by some to be the most prestigious division of biotech research and development (R&D) creates the frontiers of

biotechnology and sets the paradigms that influence both humanity and the biotech job market. The three major divisions of biotechnological R&D are research for discoveries, veterinary sciences, and bioinformatics. Jobs in this sector are usually reserved for life scientists.

Clinical research and safety: Once a functional process or product is developed by R&D, the necessity to establish trials to determine the impact of the product or process on public health and safety emerges. Biotechnologists working in this field ensure the safety of biotechnological products and processes.
Compliance: Issues of compliance with respect to biotechnological products and processes—in terms of both quality and standards and rules established by the
state—create openings for biotechnologists.
Openings for biotechnologists are also available in the following specific areas and functional fields:
Medicine and Pharmaceuticals
In this broad field, the following functional areas need biotechnologists:
genetics, including medical genetics, genetic counseling, and genetic nursing

Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) is an autonomous institution fully funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India (www.rgcb.res.in). RGCB has a major research program with the International Agency for Research Against Cancer (World Health Organization) on Human Papillomaviruses (HPV) including a state of the art efficacy-testing center for HPV vaccines.RGCB invites applications for the position of Research Scientist or Visiting Scientist or Senior Research Associate or Post Doctoral Fellow from persons with a PhD in Life Sciences or MD in Virology, Pathology or Microbiology with previous experience in HPV research, diagnosis, detection methods, serology, cytology, pathobiology, etc.
The job involves management of the HPV research facility, developing new HPV research programs and providing support to vaccine trials (antibody titers, genotyping, immune assays, etc).
The position offer and monthly emoluments will depend on experience and performance record (number and quality of publications, track record, etc).
The position of Research Scientist will be on the terms and conditions laid down by the Ministry of Science & Technology (Government of India). Persons in permanent employment can also be considered on deputation as per Government of India regulations and conditions.

Work involves management of Live Aquatic Organisms in Hatcheries and Farms that require 24 X 7 uninterrupted monitoring. Jobs are also transferable to any part of India.
The consolidated salary for contract employees indicated shall be applicable for a period of 6 months and will be enhanced subsequently on satisfactory performance during the 6 months period as Rs. 39,600 (Project Manager), Rs. 25,200 (Asst. Project Manager), Rs. 21,600 (Jr. Project Manager) Rs. 18,000 (Asst. Technical Manager) Rs. 12,000 (Technician) and Rs.14,400 for the Accountant respectively. Candidates posted at Andamans are eligible for allowances as per RGCA norms. Age limit and qualifications are relaxable in respect of MPEDA/TASPARC/OSSPARC/RGCA/NACSA/NETFISH and other departmental candidates.
Research work leading to M Phil or Ph.D or Post Doctoral degrees will not be counted as experience. Real field experience is necessary. Those candidates who are opting for deputation from MPEDA/OSSPARC/TASPARC may forward their application through proper channel to
reach the Secretary MPEDA, Kochi on or before the 20th April 2011 and the candidates working on contract at RGCA/NACSA/NETFISH interested in applying for the above posts may forward
the same to reach the Project Director, RGCA, c/o MPEDA Head Office, Panampilly Avenue, Panampilly Nagar, Kochi 682 038 on or before 5 pm on 25th April 2011 along with copies of
certificates through proper channel.
The candidates should bring with them, their requisite attested copies of certificates of qualification, experience, age, community etc for due verification along with a self Resume with
photograph. Candidates appearing for interview on the 29th and 30th April 2011 should present the above for verification on the 28th and 29th April 2011 respectively between 9.00 AM and 5.00 PM. Candidates who do not produce the requisite particulars will not be eligible to appear for interview.
